The argumentative essay was my least favorite assignment the entire year out of every class. The topic was very vague and it was hard to find facts to add to the body of the paragraph. I did extremely bad, only because my MLA format was not correct. If I could change this project I would have liked to have chosen what we argued about so that it would be more personal. I really like essays because they're independent and involve research.
This was the first essay we did this year and I had mixed feelings about it. I wrote about moving from my hometown to Wake Forest. I did good on it because I felt deeply about what I was writing. I wouldn't change anything about this because I got a good grade, I got to work alone, and I enjoyed writing what I wrote.
Romeo and Juliet Discussion Board (1/3 of "Other Works")
Discussion boards were my favorite thing in this class because I got to read what others wrote. It was a good way to get to know people and how they write. The Romeo and Juliet one was great because we got to write about the controversy of whether or not it was true love. From this project, I learned that everyone writes differently and that peoples opinions are always changing.
The "Your Verse" project really excited me. There weren't a lot of creative boundaries so I had free range on what I wanted to do. My flag was sort of plane. It was plane because I hate cluttered things and that's how I represented it. It had a palmetto tree to represent my South Carolina roots. It also had a cross to represent my faith. I wouldn't change a thing about this project. The Your Verse project taught me to never be ashamed of who I am.
The informative essay was something I had never really done before. We wrote a letter then made a podcast. I liked the project because my group was helpful and put in equal effort. From this assignment I learned how to combine everybody's idea into one project. If I could change one thing I would rather create a video over a podcast.
We did an in class free write when we were reading the novel Romeo and Juliet. We wrote about what we thought about the novel so far. I really enjoyed reading Romeo and Juliet so I believe I did well on this free write. I like free writes because they help develop my writing skills and I can write the way I like to.
This free write was focused around the question, "do good fences make good neighbors". I liked this prompt because it made me think. My answer was thought through because you couldn't just write random stuff down because it wouldn't make sense. I love doing free writes because they help me focus on developing my writing skills by myself.
SPES paragraphs were my enemy this semester. I never fully understood why I was getting such poor grades on them. I don't really like writing with a designated format such as SPES. I wish it was more creative and had less room for error. I enjoyed the Harrison Bergeron topic though because the story behind it was interesting.
Analysis of Writing
I can say that my writing has improved vastly over this course. My formatting is more precise and my vocabulary has become more extensive. We worked on three essays and many other writing assignments. My writing as the beginning of the semester was mediocre at best; now I can say that I can write with more feeling and purpose.
Overall, I enjoyed this course. I normally do not like english class but I really enjoyed this one. Our class felt like a small family and we had fun and no drama. We were all friends and it showed. The course itself was okay. The workload was tough but with hardwork and dedication it was manageable. I had fun and learned a lot. I also made many memories that will last me a lifetime.
